The Dhokra Elephant Riding is a walking elephant with a small rider perched high on its back, arm raised as if to show the way ahead. The elephant's face is the heart of the piece, broad ears fanned wide and stamped with rosettes, a beaded band across the brow, the trunk hanging in curved, ridged segments to the ground, and the eyes rendered with real expression. Above sits the rider, upright, with a headdress and a slim raised arm, a whole little story told between two figures. Finished in a rich gold tone, this Dhokra sculpture has a ceremonial swagger to it, the sense of a procession caught in motion.

Two bodies, one cast, and that is the difficulty. Dhokra artisans wind fine wax threads over a clay core to form the elephant, working each rosette and beaded strap into the surface, then shape the rider separately in the same way and join the two before the whole piece goes for casting in one continuous pour. The mould comes apart afterwards and is never used again, which is why each of these Dhokra handicrafts turns out subtly its own. This is real traditional craftsmanship, nothing like the flat, identical elephants stacked on shelves in most craft stores.

It looks best viewed from the side, where the profile of the ears and the raised arm read most clearly. Try it on a console, a bookshelf, a mantel, or a study desk where you can look across at it. It sits beautifully alongside your other Dhokra figurines and traditional handicrafts, yet has enough narrative pull to hold a shelf all by itself. If you are browsing handicrafts online for a piece with a story to tell, this is one of the more captivating Dhokra art products to bring into a room.

There is a warmth to this pair that runs deeper than decoration, a rider and their elephant moving somewhere together, and that carries the piece far beyond ordinary craft decorations and into something you bond with. It is perfect for an entrance hall, a living room, a study, or a home already full of handicraft products collected over the years, and it makes a memorable gift for a collector, a traveller, or anyone who loves traditional art and craft. A gentle dusting keeps the gold tone shining across the detailing, and asking for almost nothing in return, this Dhokra artifact stays striking for years, a true piece of heritage craft with a story behind it.

Care Instructions
  • Dust the ears, trunk, and beaded chains with a soft, dry brush at regular intervals so particles do not settle in the raised patterning
  • When the golden highlights dim, buff only the raised areas with a dry cotton cloth and leave the darker recesses untouched so the contrast stays sharp
  • Keep the elephant in a dry, airy place, away from bathrooms, damp corners, and steam that speed up dullness in brass
  • For an occasional deeper clean, use a soft toothbrush with a mild lemon and salt paste, work gently around the ears and ornaments, rinse quickly, and dry thoroughly
  • Avoid abrasive scrubbers, wire brushes, and harsh chemical polishes, as they wear down the fine beadwork and flatten the antique tones
  • Once the piece is fully dry, apply a thin coat of clear lacquer to preserve both the golden sheen and the darker shading together
  • Lift the elephant by its body rather than the trunk, tusks, or the rider, and keep it clear of direct sunlight and heat sources
