“Families that eat together, stay together.”

The pulls and pressures of contemporary life, especially the omnipresent lure of technical gadgets, are slowly but steadily drawing families and friends into a cosy, comfortable cocoon focused only around food, and conversations – the dining room – a space which was dangerously reeling into the realm of the defunct.

This sacred space of unhurried time and unfettered conversations should be anchored around furniture which brings people together and helps them interact. This inevitably means putting together a fine ensemble of the dining table and the dining chairs.

So what would you look for when choosing a set of dining chairs?

Character and comfort go together and should be the # 1 consideration. Irrespective of which style you lean towards, the size of the table and the chairs should ensure ease of use and comfort. Optimum comfort is ensured when the dining chair seat is 22X24 inches, don’t settle for anything smaller than 17 inches by 20 inches. Also choose chairs which can easily fit under the dining table. A minimum of 12 inches between the table-top and dining chair seat ensures relaxed seating and adequate leg room.

Consider the material. Upholstered, or just solid wood? For long meals and seating, an upholstered chair in leather or fabric is obviously the ultimate in comfort. With small children running and spilling around, however, it may not be the most practical option. Solid wooden ones on the other hand, with contoured seats and angled backs are not only comfortable, but durable and stylish.

Armed or without? Choose a chair with arms if you have family members with knee problems, elderly members or even toddlers (in the absence of a baby high chair). Remember you need to add a few more inches in side space when you use chairs with arms. If space is a constraint, and the family comprises mostly young members, ‘armless’, high-backed ones are ideal, and they can be moved around easily.

Multipurpose or only for dining? Matching table and chair sets are the usual dining room route, as they are easy on the eye and aesthetically authentic. Alternatively, a simple rectangular table with clean vertical lines can be matched with a plethora of chair styles, which add another aesthetic dimension. If multipurpose is the requirement, choose end chairs which can be used at the dining table and as extensions to your living room, when the guests outnumber the sofa seats.

Mismatched chairs are fast becoming fashionable. Keep to one common factor, either the legs or the material or the colour and go wild.

Compact dining rooms or shared kitchen and dining spaces are opting for dining benches as they can be tucked away and under the table and can even function as a statement piece with unique patterns and finishes.

Finally, the two most important factors to be considered are sturdiness and maintenance. The dining chair must be able to stay firm, irrespective of the weight on it, and must be easy to clean.
