It’s New Year’s Eve Weekend, what better time to host a party, a gathering, an intimate dinner or just chai/coffee and chat with family and friends?

Ergo, time to take out your favourite serveware/buy items on that wish list you’ve been updating up the whole year!

Before you do that, read our tips on choosing serveware for the occasion.

Very often, we collect serveware, mesmerised purely by their form and aesthetics, without giving enough thought to their function – i.e. how we will actually use them.

So, the first rule of thumb is to ask yourself these two questions - what kind of food do I regularly make and how many people are usually seated around my table?

Next is to ascertain that you have the essentials in your collection:

Serving Platters: These are used for serving salads, meat cuts, kababs, roasted veggies, cheese and dessert. Choose oval ones for all, except dessert which is better served using a square platter, and cheese on a rectangular one.

Serving Bowls: Among the most essential and versatile of serveware, small ones are great for soups and cereals, the mid-sized ones for gravy-based dishes, and even bread folded in soft towels! Gravy boats are another great way to serve gravy dishes, which can be slowly poured out. Large bowls take centre-stage for rice, pasta, and hey, pick an oversized one for dinner drama!

Water Pitcher: A Form meets Function item placed at the centre of the dining table, with matching glasses.

Dinner Sets: At the core of serveware are the dinner sets which usually comprise a dinner plate, a salad/side plate, soup bowl, sometimes include cup and saucer. Keep two sets of unique dinnerware. One that you will use on a daily basis, another for formal entertaining. With mix and match in trend, go ahead and choose items individually without buying as a set.

Cutlery: Soup spoons, serving spoons and forks, salad tongs, dessert servers, knife/spoon/fork sets are de rigeuer.

Specialty trays or boards: Narrow wooden trays to serve breads or finger food, or even a wooden cutting board doubling up as a cheese platter.

If you use the baking oven for a majority of your cuisine, you may want to consider oven-to-table cook and serveware, saving you precious space and washing up time!

Serving Trays and Coasters: If you are getting your group together in the drawing room, a serving tray to transport your beverages and finger food, and coasters to hold the drinks are must-haves.

In this era, eclectic is in! While fine porcelain, silver cutlery, and crystal stemware are timeless and gracious, maintenance is a bit of a challenge. Opt for contemporary and trendier options in glazeware, porcelain, stoneware, cast iron, wood, steel and terracotta. Traditionally white and cream have had the upper hand and always will, however, vibrant and rustic hues in blues, browns, greens and maroons are hugely popular too.
