Did you know that furniture for commercial orders in the hospitality, hospital, academic, corporate, institutional spaces are designed and developed quite differently from those built for home spaces?

Well, they are and here’s why:

Commercial furniture refers to furniture that will be used in spaces which will be open to and used by members of the public, implying frequent and heavy-duty usage. Businesses must keep this in the forefront of their buying decisions. Picking up bulk pieces in regular retail stores on sale are an absolute no-no. Sturdy furniture for excessive everyday use is de rigeur in commercial spaces. You don’t want guests or visitors falling off/having something fall on them and hurting themselves. Complaints and lawsuits are not in your client list!

Long-lasting, durable, weather-resistant furniture are typically made from hardwoods like teak and beechwood, lower gauge steel, plastic, resin, non-corrosive materials, UV resistant fabrics like acrylic, olefin and polyester, and open cell, PET and polyurethane foam. While they may be slightly costlier, they will save you stress, insomnia and money in the long run.

Chairs and tables are some of the most common among commercial furniture, so let’s consider some important criteria when buying chairs and tables for commercial purposes.

Ensure the chairs are reinforced at key pressure points and have a thicker cross-section for extra support. Wider backs and solid-wood saddle seats will ensure durability and comfort. They must be strength-tested and carry additional warranty.

Stain-resistant acrylic and poly fabrics, or canvas and rattan which have passed the ‘rub’ (measure of durability of a fabric) test must be used.

If you are buying tables for a restaurant, consider granite as the table-top, which not only looks luminous, it is highly sanitary (resistant to bacterial infection), resistant to heat, and easy to clean. Of course, it requires additional structural support, and is hard to remove. Wood is a perennially popular option, as it can be styled to suit all ambiences, can be made bacteria-resistant and easy to maintain with the right polish, coat, or varnish. Choices range from teak, walnut, sheesham. Laminates are another popular table top material and a resilient choice as it is impregnated with resins, making them hard-wearing and durable.

Table bases must be proportionate to the weight of the table top. Bases generally can support 10 pounds per square foot.  A base, however that can handle just the weight of the table is not ideal, because the base needs to support extra weight, such as customers using the table top as support to get out of their seat. A proper fit base will also help prevent the table top from tipping over. The most common base materials are stainless steel, steel, iron, aluminum and wood. Stainless steel bases are great for restaurants, kitchens and outdoor tables because of its rust-resistant quality.
